Bradley R. Schmidt - Associate Doctor

Bradley R. Schmidt, DVM, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology)

Dr. Schmidt received his veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 1991. Following veterinary school, Dr. Schmidt completed a small animal internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, and then moved into private practice in the Boulder and Denver region. In 1994, Dr. Schmidt entered a residency in medical oncology at the University of Illinois.

From 1996-1998, Dr. Schmidt served as clinical instructor at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. During his time there, Dr. Schmidt was a coordinator of the clinical oncology department, where he instructed senior students, interns, and residents in clinical medicine, provided didactic teaching to second and third year students and coordinated clinical research. Dr. Schmidt was involved in new/novel medical therapies for tumors of the canine urinary bladder and oral cavity. His other duties included serving as co-chair of the ICU procedures committee, and serving as coordinator for advanced imaging protocols (CT and MRI).

Following his time at Purdue University, Dr. Schmidt moved into private practice at Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa. He later became a consultant at VCA Berwyn Animal Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Schmidt also practiced internal medicine and oncology at VCA Veterinary Specialists of Northern Colorado and is currently a telemedicine consultant and instructor with Sound Technologies, Inc.

Dr. Schmidt's special interests include cancer of the urogenital system, as well as complications associated with cancer and cancer treatments. He is also helping to develop a novel, specialized cancer treatment for animals, superficial contrast enhanced radiation therapy (CERT). This therapy uses contrast agents to dramatically increase the absorbed dose of radiation to tumors while sparing surrounding tissues. CERT has the potential to help in the treatment of cancers with as few as one treatment. We hope to bring this technology to NFVS, P.A. in the near future.

On a personal note, Dr. Schmidt enjoys fly fishing, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities.
